How to plan a tile layout in 3D
- 1Set the tile size and joint width, then pick a tile colour, a grout colour and a surface look (plain, marble, wood, terrazzo or concrete).
- 2Choose a pattern, where to start tiling, and which walls to tile — full height, half height or just a splashback.
- 3Enter your room's size in the floor plan, then switch the 3D view to “My room size” to see your own room.
- 4Rotate and zoom the 3D room, and switch between living room, bedroom and bathroom furniture.
- 5Download an image or a PDF with the floor plan and tile counts, or open the tile calculator for boxes.
How the visualizer counts whole and cut tiles
- 01Every tile is drawn at its real size, in the 6 × 5 m sample room or in your own room size.
- 02Your floor plan counts each tile as whole (all corners inside) or cut (crosses the edge).
- 03Tiles to buy = whole + cut, plus 5 % for breakage.
Counting the real layout is usually more accurate than a flat waste percentage, because it shows how many tiles your edges will actually cut. Offcuts are not reused in the count, which keeps it on the safe side.
Marble veins, wood grain, terrazzo chips and concrete textures are drawn in code, so every tile looks a little different, as real tiles do. Colours on screen are only a guide — always look at a real sample in your room's light before you buy.
Tips before you buy
- Starting from the centre often gives equal cuts on both sides of the room.
- Avoid thin slivers of tile at a doorway — move the start point a little if you see them.
- Herringbone and diagonal layouts look great but create more cuts; the count shows how many.
- Large, light tiles with a matching grout make a small room look bigger; a contrasting grout shows off the pattern.
- Wood-look planks laid in herringbone need more cuts at the edges — keep a box spare.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 3D view to scale?
Yes. The sample room is 6 m × 5 m with 3.2 m walls, and your own room uses the width and length you enter with 2.6 m walls. Tiles and joints are drawn at their real size.
Can I tile just one wall or only halfway up?
Yes. Choose any of the back, left and right walls, and tile them full height, half height (1.2 m / 4 ft) or as a 0.6 m (2 ft) splashback.
Can I see marble or wood-look tiles?
Yes. Pick a surface look — marble, wood, terrazzo or concrete — and any colour. The texture follows each tile's direction, so wood planks keep their grain in herringbone too.
Why are cut tiles counted as whole tiles?
Each cut tile starts as a whole tile. Sometimes an offcut can be used elsewhere, which is a small bonus on top of the count.
Can I upload a photo of my tile?
Not yet. Tiles are drawn in code so the scale is exact and there are no image rights issues.
Can I save or share my design?
Yes. Download a picture of the 3D room or a PDF with the floor plan and counts, add it to your project list, or copy a link that opens the same design.
